Why Airline Passengers Lose 5 Pounds Every May 1st FAA Assumed Weights Aircraft Weight and Balance

This is a very quick overview why airline passengers "lose" 5 pounds for summer weights when airlines use the "assumed weight" method. It is impractical to weigh all passengers at most airlines, so the FAA allows airlines to use the "assumed weight" method according to Advisory Circular AC 120-27. Hopefully, it is a great refresher for airline interview preparation or just a good overview to help you learn about this concept! https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/1035868 is the full FAA document page. Many airlines use the CDC's "average adult" weights, which are updated from time to time. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/body-measurements.htm for the current standard average weights. Then airlines add 5 lbs (summer) or 10 lbs (winter) for clothing when calculating the passenger load for each flight. Check out my other videos especially the one about takeoff alternates for Part 121 air carriers, the one about alternate and fuel requirements for Domestic/Flag/Supplemental, the video on Part 117 duty time rules and other Part 121 regulations. Visit my website at www.theaviationvault.com to learn much more about aircraft dispatchers, airlines, and dispatch history! Learn more about LeTourneau University's aviation program at www.letu.edu/fly or about our all-online Aviation Studies degree program at http://bit.ly/AviationOnline. Always remember that Laura, when you get right down to it, is just a pilot and a dispatcher. She is explaining facts from the source materials but may be incorrect or out of date. You should always follow your primary guidance (Aircraft manuals, government regulations, etc.) before listening to anything from this YouTube channel.
